About the Book
The View from the Curb, Jacob M. Appel’s second collection of poems, draws upon the author’s experiences as a psychiatrist, ethicist and historian, to offer a nuanced reflection on a suburban childhood under the shadow of his grandfather’s youth in pre-war Europe. Drawing on comedic devices to cope with tragic events, Appel blends formal meter with novel structures to create a distinctive voice and style uniquely suited to the odd yet familiar universe in which he lives.

Appel is currently Professor of Psychiatry and Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, where he is Director of Ethics Education in Psychiatry, Assistant Director of the Academy for Medicine and the Humanities, and Medical Director of the Mental Health Clinic at the East Harlem Health Outreach Program.
