Unsolicited Press Announces the Release of Sad Man Happy Hour by Aileen Keown Vaux
Unsolicited Press is proud to announce the October 6, 2026 release of Sad Man Happy Hour, a debut poetry collection by Aileen Keown Vaux that confronts ecological grief, queer life, and the absurdity of survival with humor, precision, and startling emotional clarity.
Set in the Pacific Northwest, Sad Man Happy Hour resists the region’s familiar pastoral mythologies and instead offers a lived-in landscape shaped by county fairs, climate anxiety, pandemic isolation, and cultural noise. Vaux builds a wry, disarming voice, deeply attentive to the contradictions of living in a destabilized world.
Rather than elegizing collapse, these poems demand presence. They locate meaning not outside of crisis, but within it, holding grief and absurdity side by side. Humor becomes a survival strategy, one that denies both despair and easy consolation.
As conversations around climate literature and queer ecopoetics continue to evolve, Sad Man Happy Hour arrives as a necessary intervention—one that centers lived experience over abstraction and community over distance. It speaks directly to readers navigating uncertainty, asking not how to escape the present, but how to remain inside it.
Aileen Keown Vaux is a poet, essayist, and instructional designer with an MFA from Eastern Washington University. Their work has appeared in publications including The Rumpus, where they also conduct interviews with contemporary writers. Sad Man Happy Hour is their first full-length collection. They live and work in Portland, Oregon.
