Unsolicited Press Publishes David Loring Nash’s Northwoods Dark-Fiction Collection, The Burntwood Anthology

PORTLAND, OR — Unsolicited Press has published The Burntwood Anthology, a collection of six interwoven dark-fiction stories by Minnesota Book Award finalist David Loring Nash. Released July 14, 2026, the collection draws readers into the rivers, forests, small towns, and isolated cabins of northern Wisconsin, where beauty and danger are rarely far apart.

Named for the river running through its pages, The Burntwood Anthology combines Northwoods horror, psychological unease, subtle witchcraft, supernatural justice, and a distinctly Midwestern sense of menace. Nash’s characters enter the wilderness carrying private grudges, damaged friendships, inflated egos, old betrayals, and appetites they do not fully understand. The landscape has a way of exposing each one.

Across the collection, teenage excursions curdle into something darker, lifelong relationships fracture along hidden fault lines, spirits wait beside the water, and self-appointed kings discover that neither status nor confidence will protect them from consequence. Monsters appear in several forms, though the human variety may be the least predictable.

The stories explore hubris, revenge, friendship, sexuality, modern dating, memory, and the dangerous belief that a person can outrun what they have done. Braided together by place, mood, and recurring currents of retribution, they create a portrait of a region where nature is neither passive nor forgiving.

Nash is a Minnesota Book Award finalist for his 2024 novel In Wells’ Time, also published by Unsolicited Press. His debut novel, The Man in the Pines, reimagines the life of Paul Bunyan, and his short fiction has appeared frequently in dark-fiction anthologies published by Dead Birds Publishing.

The Burntwood Anthology is available in paperback for $19.95 through Unsolicited Press and participating booksellers.
