In a time of lockdown one of the things we miss is having friends visit, and sitting over a pot of coffee, around our kitchen table, and talking about the goings-on in the community. But this is exactly how reading The Tin Can House and Other Stories by Susan Pepper Robbins felt.
This is a collection that is character driven. The narrator fills the reader in, in such an easy conversational style, it really does feel that you are part of that community, that you know these people with their tribulations and celebrations, and you are happy, curious, and intrigued to be included in the spilling of the details.
This is a book I read over a period of time. I wanted those 'kitchen-table-visits' to be spaced. To anticipate the next one. To remember the characters who pop in again. And again. To realise that you almost know them yourself.
I rarely buy a print copy of a book these days. But this one was an exception. I wanted to feel it. To appreciated the clever cover design. And for it to sit on my kitchen table like a welcome visitor.
I will read this book again. I suspect I've missed something (as you would in the midst of kitchen table conversations), and I look forward to discovering more in this multi-layered collection of stories.
